5 must-see local shows in 2017

Theatre iNQ will present Alice in Wonderland in Townsville this year
Theatre iNQ will present Alice in Wonderland in Townsville this year

Townsville’s theatre scene is growing by the year, so it’s no surprise that 2017 offers a calendar jam-packed with local talent. Whether you’re born to hand jive or would prefer a trip down the rabbit hole, there’s a performance to curb your cravings coming to Townsville in 2017!

Grease
Townsville Choral Society
8 – 18 February
It’s automatic, systematic, and arriving in less than two weeks! All the frivolity of Grease will be taking over the Townsville Civic Theatre from 8 February and, if you were lucky enough to see the Choral Society’s production of Rent, you’ll know this will be a performance not to miss. Like a salted caramel milkshake, this show promises to dish up an old favourite, with a fresh new twist.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
NQOMT
22 March – 1 April
Talk about nostalgia! Whether it’s been on TV or you’ve seen a performance years ago, Joseph’s show is one that rings a bell to many. What makes this one unmissable is the NQOMT element of perfection, making sure every last stage direction and musical note is as brilliant as possible for opening night. After NQOMT’s last show Rock of Ages left the Civic Theatre head banging, we’re sure their Joseph will be just as colourful.

Alice in Wonderland
Theatre iNQ
24 June – 9 July
There’s nothing quite like unique adaptations by locals – and that’s what Theatre iNQ does better than anyone! While based on the story by Lewis Carroll, this version will be sure to still have surprises around every corner starring Townsville’s best up-and-comers.

Summer of the Aliens
Full Throttle Theatre Company
November
There are few plays as quirky or intriguing as this, and in the hands of Full Throttle, you know it will be one to remember. A coming-of-age story about a young Aussie more threatened by flying saucers than the Cuban missile crisis, there are moments that will bring on tears of laughter and others sure to tug at heart strings.

A Christmas Carol
Townsville Little Theatre
December
Nothing symbolises Christmas quite as well as this Charles Dickens classic, adapted by Guy Williams for the stage. The story of Scrooge is one that many of us know well thanks to countless retallings and repackagings. After hearing Townsville Little Theatre’s big plans for this one at their Season Launch, we’re already counting down until opening night.

Honourable mentions
There are so many performances on offer this year, it really is hard to only pick one from each local group. In March, the hilarious and kooky world of Terry Pratchett arrives in town with Townsville Little Theatre’s production of Jingo; Theatre iNQ are bringing their Shakespeare under the Stars back in September, performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Queens Gardens; and we’ve heard whispers that Elpheba and all the magic of Wicked will be landing in Townsville in 2017… But we can’t confirm those rumours just yet.
