The North Queensland Festival of One Act Plays will celebrate reaching a quarter of a century this year, and with 15 performance applications already received for its 25th event, is showing no signs of slowing down.

Applications are open until March 20, so the high number already received promises a jam-packed program of North Queensland’s most talented across the weekend of the Festival, from May 5-7 at the Townsville Civic Theatre.

Groups from as far afield as Rockhampton, Mount Isa and Atherton are invited to register, with the event showcasing the best performers from across the North.

Community and Cultural Committee Chair, Cr Colleen Doyle, said the North Queensland Festival of One Act Plays was a great opportunity for those in more rural areas to be given an opportunity to perform for larger audiences, and be given the recognition they deserve.

“Events such as the Festival are important for Townsville because they provide a pathway for local artistic talent. It can be difficult to be located regionally, so far away from major centres, so council needs to play its part in nurturing local talent and offering as many development and performance opportunities as possible,” said Cr Doyle.

“Live theatre is engaging, thought provoking, and often makes you feel part of something that you just can’t experience in front of a TV or movie screen. Nothing compares to the art of live theatre and this year’s festival will no doubt be another amazing showcase of local talent. I invite the public to come along as audience members and witness the best from our region.

“In Townsville we have a long and proud history of hosting arts and cultural festivals. Arts and culture enrich the lives of residents and enhance our quality of life. Arts also have the potential to attract people to our city, which has a spill-on effect to other industries.”

Registrations for the North Queensland Festival of One Act Plays are open to everyone, from professional theatre groups to schools and community groups, and close on March 20. Email to request an application form or call the Townsville Civic Theatre on 4727 9013.

Audience members can purchase a ticket to enjoy the entire Festival for $36, or choose an individual session for $18 each. Tickets are available at or by calling 4727 9797.
