Market not afraid to be labelled

Sundays in Townsville are renowned for markets. From Flinders Street to Bushy Beach, there are weekly markets across the city offering a collection of fresh produce and knick knacks for lovers of local creations.

But when it comes to finding a niche, the Label Traders Market takes the cake.

Held on the third Sunday of each month at Mundingburra State School, the Label Traders Market offers a range of vintage and recycled products sourced or created by its many stallholders. Market Coordinator, Sandra Wakeham, said the concept for Label Traders was the product of an overnight brainwave.

“I was at home on the lounge one night thinking I would love to start a market. I simply decided I would, and by lunch time the next day I had registered a business, sourced insurance and a venue and hit the ground running,” said Sandra.

“I have learnt along the way, let the market evolve to become what it is now and watch it keep growing with each round.

“I think what sets it apart and keeps people coming back is the stall holders’ dedication to delivering such a variety of new, interesting, historical, recycled, upcycled and designer goods. This is teamed with our total dedication to make each market day a whole pile of fun, with no stress and a relaxed atmosphere – after all, it’s Sunday!

“Label Traders stays successful because it sticks to the business it knows: vintage, recycled and designer goods. Our regular stall holders work so hard to deliver each and every market day, and know we need to keep a welcoming happy relaxed Sunday vibe.

“My dream for Label Traders’ future is to keep growing with Mackay and Cairns to open within the next few months.

“This weekend at the Mundingburra State School we have live music by local performer KC, open access to two playgrounds for the kids, loads of new vintage, recycled and designer bargains, our famous brunch from Halo2U, coffee and treats by The Coffee Cow, Brewt Strength and Morgan and Meg all with seating under the big beautiful rain trees. Entry is always free and all welcome.”

Catch the Label Traders Market at Mundingburra State School this Sunday, 19 March, from 8am – midday. The Label Traders Market is run on the third Sunday of every month.
