It’s official: Wicked is taking over Townsville later this year.

As one of the longest-running and most well-known musicals, the Townsville Choral Society has a mammoth task ahead of them. And you can be part of the cast.

Wicked auditions will be held on 6-7 May, before the production flies into the Townsville Civic Theatre from 24 August – 2 September.

NQOMT’s Little Shop of Horrors will hold auditions at the start of May too – find the details here!

Wicked Directors Andrew Higgins and D’Arcy Mullamphy said the show has been a long time in the making.

“We’ve had the performance rights secured for Wicked for over a year. We are super excited to be the first to produce the show in North Queensland,” said Andrew.

Wicked takes place before, during and a little after proceedings shown in the classic movie The Wizard of Oz. We see that Glinda – the Good Witch of the North – and Elphaba – the Wicked Witch of the West – were once friends. We see events in the Land of Oz and the early development of some classic characters like the Wizard, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion. We even meet the Wicked Witch of the East before Dorothy’s house causes her untimely demise.

Wicked is full of amazing music and hosts a range of humorous and tender moments. The scenery and costumes promise to be spectacular and we have a few surprises for the audience with some more Townsville firsts.”

With a line of people already stretching around the block waiting to audition, Andrew shared tips on how to impress the Directors on the day.

“We are trying to make this a professional show on an amateur budget, so our cast is the key ingredient. The talent here in Townsville is of a high standard, however our lead roles will need to be top notch performers with stamina to last the 10 performances. The two lead witches’ roles are especially demanding. Having said that, every successful cast member, no matter how small or large a role, will be expected to deliver a proficient performance.

“At auditions, you need to sing a song from the show to a very small group of people and do a group dance audition. Our audition packs have all of the music you need and even a little video of the dance moves you’ll be taught on the day. We like people that are confident and well prepared. Once the initial rounds are complete the Artistic team decide which candidates have earned a call back – a second round of singing and dialogue – after which we’ll select the final casting.

“We have felt so excited and privileged to be able to produce this epic show for our community. There is a real buzz about it and we’re confident that it will be a real treat for the audience. D’Arcy and I pride ourselves on producing top-notch shows while having a good time doing it.”

Anyone wishing to audition should email an expression of interest to Katie listing the time they wish to audition, and the role/s they are auditioning for. Auditions will be held on 6-7 May at Kirwan State High School.
