Collaboration key for collective

51 models, photographers, makeup artists and hair stylists will join forces this weekend, honing their skills and expanding their portfolios in one of Townsville’s largest regular creative collaborations.

Townsville Collective Shoots are held quarterly and provide opportunities for all creative industries involved in photoshoots to gain experience and network with others in their field, with the main objective of the events to educate and expand horizons.

Organiser of Townsville Collective Shoots, Pam Versfeld, said the meet-ups were established to form connections between industries.

“The Collective came about because there was a lack of friendship in our industries and we wanted to create more of a local sister/brotherhood among our peers,” said Pam.

“Depending on the event, for most Collectives we do not turn people away. Attendants commit to coming and we accommodate that, in one way or another. If we have 30 models, 15 photographers, two makeup artists and no hair stylists, I make phone calls and send messages until we have enough makeup artists and hair stylists for our models and photographers.”

The success of the shoots can be seen in the regular attendees from both Townsville and further afield.

“If our artists didn’t benefit from what we provide, we wouldn’t have the same people attending over and over, with models vying to work with our photographers. We wouldn’t have the wonderful friendships that we can maintain with our peers because it presents us with an excuse to get together every three months.

“The most we’ve had involved in a shoot was nearly 70 participants in total and that was with 40 models. We’ve had models travel from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Emerald, Mackay and Cairns, and one of our regular photographers comes from Charters Towers every 3 months.

“My dream is that more artists will see our Collective as a place to create wonderful art and not view it as free or unpaid work. Each artist has so much to gain from one of our events!”

The benefits for all involved include gaining experience in as many aspects and styles of their field as possible, network with local models, photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, set designers and business owners, and add quality images to their portfolio.

Townsville Collective Shoots’ Dark Beauty event this Sunday is booked out. To check out photos from the shoot and to be the first to know about their July shoot, like Collective Shoots Townsville on Facebook.
