A regular face at the Palm Creek Folk Festival – whether as part of the crowd or performing on stage – is Dawn, lead singer of the inimitable Band of Dawn.

The band were recently announced as part of the 2017 Festival line-up, to showcase their eclectic method of storytelling across the weekend. Band of Dawn weave a web of narrative through their music, made even more intricate by their neo-Victorian aesthetic.

Dawn said Palm Creek Folk Festival was a rare chance for North Queensland artists to perform for a large audience locally, and was not something that should be taken for granted.

“I love Palm Creek, it is such a brilliant platform for North Queensland artists and performers. We don’t have as many festivals as our southern brothers and sisters – certainly not of this scale – so we are extremely lucky that the Festival committee keep building it to be bigger and better every year,” said Dawn.

“At a live Band of Dawn performance, you can expect an intricate layering of sounds and the possibility of being put in a snake-charmer-esqe trance. We have a diverse mixture of songs so I hope there is something in there for everyone. Bluegrass, meets rock, meets the plains people of the Americas, meets traditional folk, meets India. Then add to that a few stories of exotic travels for good measure.

“We love dressing up to suit the theme of our storytelling which is set way back in the Victorian times, when the East well and truly met with the West.”

The return to stage comes as Dawn prepares to release her second EP, The Spinning Jenny VOL. 2. The new extended play comes four years after VOL. 1, a hiatus attributed to the craziness of a busy life.

“I became very unwell on the back of our 2013 Australian tour and album launch and took some time out to heal. I finished my postgrad to become a school music teacher and have put all my energy into achieving that and gaining experience in the classroom. I am finally now able to balance my two greatest passions: teaching children music, and collaborating with musicians who I adore.”

Band of Dawn will feature at the Palm Creek Folk Festival from 8-11 June. Information on the band’s future Festival appearances and the release of The Spinning Jenny VOL. 2 can be found on the DAWN + Band of Dawn Facebook page.
