Huxley’s Mega Mums Mix

In case you missed it… Mother’s Day is THIS SUNDAY! Don’t stress – there’s a whole lot of creative locals who could have the perfect gift for your mum, which you can find here

If you’re looking for something special to do with your mum this weekend, look no further – here are all the best events that you and your mum will both love!

Banff Mountain Film Festival – 7pm tonight @ Townsville Civic Theatre
Think of David Attenborough-style untouched scenery, combined with award-winning short films, and that’s exactly what you’ll be in store for when this touring Film Festival stops in at the Civic Theatre tonight. The night features the best short films from the week-long Banff Mountain Film Festival, held in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. When the programmers are forced to compress a week’s worth of short films into a three hour event, you know you’ll be getting the best of the best.

The Everly Brothers & Buddy Holly together in Concert – 8pm Saturday @ Townsville Civic Theatre
Whether your mum is a lover of rock and roll or is a die-hard Soapie addict, this is the show for her. The Robertson brothers can be heard every weeknight, as the voices behind the Home & Away theme song – but are successful in their own right, with half a million record sales and two ARIA and Golden Guitar nominations. They’ll be paying tribute to the Everly Brothers and will be joined by the award-winning Scot Robin, who has filled the shoes of Buddy Holly for over 20 years now – bringing the story of Buddy’s short-but-impressive musical career to stage. This will be a night full of numbers that will make you want to get up and dance in your seat – and we don’t discourage that one bit!

Jason Clark & the Bar Chords – 10pm til late Saturday @ Molly Malone’s
If you want to keep the grooving going after a night of Everly and Buddy anthems, stop in at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub to belt out some more classics with Jason Clark & the Bar Chords. Jason is well-known throughout Townsville from the Bushy Beach Tavern right down to Ayr’s Kalamia Hotel. He always puts on a great performance, and will leave you and mum waking up with no voice on Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday…

Renegade Handmade Mother’s Day Market – 8am – 1pm Sunday @ Marian School
We loooooove Renegade Handmade in the Warrina Arcade (please read that again and appreciate my rhyming prowess). Karissa’s monthly Renegade Handmade Market is always a hit, but will be even more exciting this Sunday with all stallholders specially prepared with last-minute Mother’s Day gifts! The Market offers not only a range of incredible locally-made arts and crafts, but the most delicious options for breakfast, brunch and lunch you’ll find in Townsville.

Neighbourhood Sessions by the Sea – 9am Sunday @ Tobruk Kiosk
The tunes continue on Sunday morning, with local musicians Dan Baker, Hazy & Co and Motions stepping up to the Neighbourhood Sessions microphone for the Sessions’ first ever open event – no need to RSVP, just bring your picnic rug along to the Tobruk Kiosk from 9am for live acoustic tunes from 9:30! There will be coffee and snacks available from the Kiosk if you’re feeling lazy – otherwise bring a picnic basket of goodies along, a donation for the artists performing, and enjoy a relaxed morning on the Strand with mum!

Make your own flowers – 9-11am Sunday @ Perc Tucker Regional Gallery
Remember the days when mum said the handmade presents meant the most? Make something with her this Sunday, as you’re guided through how to transform various papers and fabrics into oversized flowers! The session is free, you get to take your bouquet afterward, and can choose to make a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation if you like.

Whether your mum loves film, music, markets or art, there’s something on for her this weekend in Townsville. And if you need a playlist for in the car between events, we’ve got you covered too! Have a wonderful weekend, and to all the maternal figures out there: Happy Mother’s Day from Huxley!
