Pip Earl, the name behind Pipsilk artist/ fabric designer, is one of the many locals whose creations will be on display at the 2017 Townsville Fashion Festival. We sat down for a quick catch-up with Pip ahead of next weekend’s Festival.

What will you be showcasing on this year’s runway?
I am showcasing a selection of my simple Pipsilk A-Line dresses, scarves, bags and leggings. They are all adorned with my colourful, tropically inspired art. All with a leisurely, easy wearing holiday feel about them. Easy to maintain, easy to pack, easy to wear.

How did you get started in fashion?
I am an artist and getting into fashion was really by chance. I discovered an Australian website that enabled me to show my art on clothing and other merchandise. I started off with cushions then progressed to leggings then scarves, bags and dresses. Fashion is fun, there’s nothing like the thrill of being out socially and seeing someone wearing your art!

What inspires you?
I am inspired by the great outdoors, I love Townsville’s fauna and flora. Anything vibrant can make me want to snap a photo to paint later, whether it is spectacular lighting, shadows, reflection, shape or colour.

What’s your biggest challenge?
I am enjoying the challenge of editing and mixing my artwork digitally to create interesting fabrics. I have no training in this so just design on instinct.

Townsville Fashion Festival struts back into town 25 – 28 May 2017. Visit www.townsvillefashionfestival.com.au for the full program and tickets.
