Charters Towers has seen everything from a Peter Pan spinoff to Beauty and the Beast live. This May, local group Towers Players will add to their extensive playbill and support the White Ribbon cause when they add their modern NQ twist to Oliver!

A stage adaptation of Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the musical follows the story’s namesake and his fellow street orphans as they fight to survive and live an honest life.

With defining numbers like ‘Food Glorious Food’ a large part of the production’s success, Director Allan Georgee said the musical will feature the same score, but with an updated set.

“We have stepped into the 21st century with our production and are working with a local graphic artist to produce fully projected backdrops,” said Allan.

“The show also supports the White Ribbon cause, which raises funds and awareness for domestic violence.  Given the show’s themes, we think it’s important to show we care about this important issue.  Funds raised from program sales will go towards this.”

Although it may not spring to mind when thinking ‘Broadway,’ Charters Towers has a strong theatre community that continuously stages high-calibre shows.

“Towers Players produces 3-4 shows every year and while we don’t have a regular meeting that people can attend to become involved, you can always drop us a line through our Facebook page or email us at towersplayers@gmail.com.”
