Burlesque. It’s absurd, it’s exaggerated, it’s dramatic. And it’s a whole lot of fun. The performance style has taken off in Townsville lately, both for people wanting to watch and participate: it fills you with confidence, body positivity, and sexiness.

The North Queensland Club will be transformed into Townsville’s own Moulin Rouge this Saturday night as local performers Miss Billie Beau and Valentina Rose co-produce the first Hoochie Coochie Revue.

The production will feature a range of Townsville performers, as well as national talent including winner of Burlesque Idol 2017, Rainbow.

Hoochie Coochie Revue co-producer Valentina Rose said one of Burlesque’s appeals is in the fact there’s no set style, leading to varied performances.

“I started Burlesque almost 3 years ago after a friend suggested I give it a try. I fell in love straight away and have been hooked ever since. I think the main reason I love Burlesque so much is that it can come from anything, there really is no limit to inspiration for an act, and there are very few rules,” Valentina Rose said.

“Rainbow is an incredible performer. She has an amazing talent for burlesque and dance in general, especially in comedy routines. I have seen the acts she is bringing to Townsville and they are very exciting. Rainbow also adds a bit of Charleston and other classic dance styles that aren’t really synonymous with burlesque, which creates a nice fusion in styles. I personally love her light hearted and fun approach to burlesque, you always see a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye. The audience can expect lots of laughs, and as always, expect the unexpected!

“Due to Burlesque being a predominantly 18+ performance style, it can have an effect on the types of events we can perform at. In saying that, we do also cater for under-18 events by using routines based in Charleston or GoGo. Hosting our own showcase allows more of our soloists to have the opportunity to perform, and allows us to have professional acts here in Townsville for our students to learn from.”

Catch the Hoochie Coochie Revue at the North Queensland Club this Saturday night from 7pm. Tickets are still available and can be booked here.
