A local MC and entertainer is working to put Townsville on the map, and attract more touring comedians to the city.
Mick Nelson will host a night with Sydney comedian Steve Philp this Friday, and hopes the event will lead to more regular comedy nights.
“The comedy scene has a small presence in Townsville, but it’s definitely something I want to make a permanent feature – it’s always been a section of entertainment in the city that’s too few and far between,” Mick said.
“I was presenting the sit-down comedy club here in Townsville, but because it’s quite expensive to run we don’t have a venue for that at the moment. I thought why not bring up a stand-alone comedian to do a show in the meantime – and it worked well with Steve being booked for a private function on the same weekend, so I thought we might as well get him to do a set while he’s here.
“If we get the support, I definitely plan to bring some more touring comedians up here to do some sets or their stage shows. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed presenting and it’s just satisfying to see people laughing and having fun – because we all know laughter is the best medicine.”
When not touring by himself, Steve is the hype man for Channel Nine’s NRL Footy Show – which has led to a quick wit, a smart mouth, and the ability to know how to make people laugh.
“Steve is such a relatable guy; he calls a spade a spade. He tells stories about his life in a way that just cracks you up. I had Steve up here for another comedy night I ran about two years ago. He’s from Sydney, so it was easy to get him to come back this time of year and get away from a Sydney winter,” Mick said.
Catch Steve Philp at the Mad Cow Tavern this Friday night from 7:30pm. The event is 18+, with tickets available here.
