Local songstress Mell Boyce will spend 10 days workshopping with the best in the business and performing for a panel of industry experts and agents in the heart of Los Angeles this December, after impressing in the Townsville heats of a national talent search earlier this year.
Mell was hand-picked to join the USA showcase by Melbourne’s OzLink Talent, and says the opportunity will be her first time performing overseas.
“The whole 10 days you’re there are based around a competition that you do. The first few days are workshops where professionals come in and prepare you for what you’re about to go through including how to conduct yourself in front of agents, before you move on to the competition where agents watch you and you either get callbacks afterwards or you don’t,” Mell said.
“You pay for absolutely everything involved – so as exciting as the opportunity is, there’s a price tag that comes with it. I’ve had a lot of support with this though: it’s very humbling to have to ask for help, but then at the same time is really overwhelming when people do come on board and be as generous as they have been to help me pursue this.”
Summer will be a busy season for Mell, with several concerts in the works before she flies to LA.
“I teach at The Voice Singing School here in Townsville, so we have a few concerts towards the end of the year, and I’ll also be performing in the Townsville Carols by Candlelight. After that, I fly to the States and will just ride the wave with what opportunities present themselves.”
