Props Youth Theatre will bring a childhood favourite to life when its young cast stages Charlotte’s Web next week.
The play, based on EB White’s classic novel, follows the story of Wilbur the pig and his unlikely friendship with Charlotte the spider after she hatches a plan to save him from slaughter, before imparting on readers and audiences alike heart-warming (and heart-shattering) lessons about the fragility of life.
Director Madonna Davies said the characters and logistics of the play were a perfect opportunity to showcase other skills of the Props cast members.
“Initially when the idea to do Charlotte’s Web came to me, it was when I first saw Hayley from the Vertigals [aerial silk artists] perform, and thought how incredible it would be to have them dangling from the beams in the Old Courthouse Theatre as Charlotte… we’ll be working with Cajam Circus and utilising those skills of our younger cast,” Madonna said.
“We’re seeing a lot of Props kids come up into Full Throttle and other organisations. That’s the aim, to keep them moving and continuing on in more groups like Theatre iNQ. There are a lot of Townsville actors out there who didn’t have these opportunities, so it’s amazing to have companies here providing them. It’s exciting, and there was definitely nothing like it when I was coming through!
“Charlotte Davies will be playing Charlotte, and trains at Cajam along with other leads Finn and Liam Goodson. Every kid in the cast already knew the story, have seen the movie, and want to be in this. It’s something that is really well-known and loved, and – even though it has a sad ending – I think it is a great Christmas show.”
