COUNCIL ARTS UPDATE: MAY/JUNE 2018

The Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow will return to Townsville this May IMAGE: Supplied

It’s been a big couple of weeks for the Townsville arts community during Festival 2018. It was an incredible 12 days, and it really gave us a chance to showcase the best of our city to our visitors who were here for the Commonwealth Games.

I was especially proud to see some amazing work by our local artists and performers during the festival. Not only did they hold their own next to the big headliners, in some cases I think they actually outshone them. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in Festival 2018 for once again demonstrating the diverse, innovative, and extraordinary talent that exists in Townsville.
While the festival may be over, there’s still plenty to look forward to at our city theatres and galleries in the next few weeks.

The Percivals Painting and Photographic prizes are now showing at Perc Tucker and Pinnacles Gallery respectively. Since its debut in 2007, the biennial event has become one of Australia’s most prestigious art competitions. This year we received more than 370 entries from local, national and international artists and photographers. Once again the standard is incredibly high and I encourage everyone to get down to the galleries between now and 15 July and spend some time enjoying some incredible portraiture.

In May and June, the latest in the Australian National Theatre Live (ANT Live) series will be showing. Based on a popular practice in Europe, the Australian National Theatre has been offering screenings of stage works to regional audiences. For years, the idea has enabled opera and theatre companies all over the world to bring their works to broader audiences who may not otherwise have the chance to see them.

On 12 May we have the satirical genius of The Wharf Revue, and on 16 June there’s the warts-and-all Australian comedy about the world of dog racing The Dapto Chaser. Both shows are showing in C2 at the Townsville Civic Theatre. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see some of the best work coming out of Australian theatre, right here in Townsville.

If you’re a fan of comedy – and let’s face it, who isn’t – we also have the ever-popular Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow with four shows from May 3 – 5. Every year it’s our chance to catch some of the best emerging talents from the country’s most renowned comedy festivals, and it never fails to tickle our funny bones. This year’s line-up includes UK funny-man Brennan Reece with Dane Simpson, Gillian Cosgriff and Sam Taunton. Make sure you get in fast because the tickets don’t last!
