The living Legends of Jazz will treat music-lovers to an unforgettable performance at The Ville next Saturday.
US Jazz legends Al Hermann and Bob Montgomery will join Australia’s own Roger Clark and his Quartet for an evening of some of the biggest Jazz hits.
Roger has played with Al Hermann and Bob Montgomery once before, and said it was an honour to rejoin them.
“These guys are living history and big players in the jazz scene,” said Roger.
“Bob’s arranged all the music. We’ll play lots of Classics, quite a few Blue Note tunes – Blue Note Records is a record label in New York with a lot of iconic hits – and a lot of jazz standards. Also, some Miles Davis and Charlie Parker tunes and a fair bit of stuff that Jazz people will like and know.”
Between them, Al and Bob have racked up an impressive pair of resumes. Bob has performed in back-up orchestras for such artists as Sammy Davis Jr., Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones and many more. Likewise, Al has played with Doc Cheatham, President Bill Clinton, Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett.
Roger is also a highly accomplished saxophonist who, over a lifetime, has developed a signature sound. He makes the most of the dynamic contrast and colour in his own playing, without crowding out the rhythm section.
Legends of Jazz Masterclass for High School Students
While in Townsville, Al Hermann, Bob Montgomery and the Roger Clark Quartet will run a masterclass for music students at Pimlico State High School.
As a youngster, Roger sold his pushbike to buy his first alto sax and understands firsthand the importance of encouraging musicians from an early age.
“It’s a great music school, Pimlico. My son [Rory Clark] is a great Piano player, so we’ll all go out and spend some time with the students.”
