Kookaburras Sit in the New Bus Hub

James Giddy works on the Kookaburra mural on Townsville's Ogden Street

Work has began on the 26th installment of Townsville’s Street Art collection this morning, with renowned West Australian artist James Giddy beginning his giant commission of kookaburras near the new Bus Hub.

James has completed more than 45 public works in Australia and internationally since 2013. Much of his practice centres on themes concerning the unknown as well as environmental conservation, drawing inspiration from subjects encountered on his journeys.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the artwork will capture the attention of commuters and CBD workers.

“The Bus Hub has transformed Ogden Street and it is a crucial piece of infrastructure,” Cr Hill said. “The new artwork will bring the area to life – kookaburras are gorgeous birds and they’re an Australian icon.”
