Many Townsville school students will take on some of the most well-known musical roles of all time over the coming months.
Ryan Catholic College’s Louise Whittaker stars as Mabel in their production of The Pirates of Penzance.
“I’ve been in the ensemble for our past three school musicals, but have always wanted to be a lead,” Louise said. “It motivated me even more knowing what a great musical The Pirates of Penzance is.”
The production is an exciting one for schools, with many opportunities for lead roles.
“The Pirates of Penzance is a comic operetta set in the 1800s that follows the story of Frederic, an accidental pirate who rejoins civilisation on his 21st birthday, meets the beautiful Mabel, and falls in love.
“Unfortunately for him, she, along with her nine other sisters, are the daughters of a Major General. The pirates return and bring with them plenty of tension, conflicts and laughs.”
Louise said musicals were an incredible opportunity for students.
“School productions are a great way to meet people you would never have interacted with otherwise. Finding new friends and getting experience in musical theatre are definitely some of the main reasons that I auditioned.
“I always enjoy performing in school musicals, so would love to keep performing after I graduate!
“Ryan Catholic college is bringing timeless musical theatre to the western suburbs. Andrew Higgins, who is the producer of the show, has brought this show to the stage three times before and brings this experience to Ryan to make it the best one yet! You won’t know that you have loved school productions until you have seen this!”
