We’re currently on the hunt for six writers to join our first ever mentorship progran.

Class of HUX will see six emerging writers hone their skills as they produce a body of published works that champion Townsville’s dynamic artistic landscape.

What’s involved?

  • Take part in fortnightly skills workshops and editorial meetings as we work together to celebrate and elevate local artists.
  • Conduct interviews with local artists to complete fortnightly writing assignments for publication on HUXLEY Press.

Workshops start Tuesday, 7 June and run fortnightly until November 2022.

  • Be exposed to different artforms, new ideas and the inspiring projects taking shape in our city.
Who are we looking for?

We are looking for people with fresh voices, a positive outlook and a passion for elevating others. You do not need to be an experienced writer to apply, however entry-level writing skills are vital as you will be expected to deliver regular work from early on the program.

  • Applications are open to all participants 17 years and older currently residing in Townsville.
  • Applicants must be available to attend fortnightly workshops on Tuesday evenings. Workshops will be held at Murky Waters Studio in Townsville’s CBD starting 7 June 2022.
  • Applicants must be able to conduct interviews using a combination of email, phone or in-person communication.
  • Applicants must be able to deliver fortnightly writing assignments by deadline. We suggest allowing two to three hours per story for research, interviews, transcribing, writing and making edits.


  • Six (6) emerging writers will be chosen to participate in Class of HUX 2022.
  • There is no fee associated with participation. Class of HUX is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund with great appreciation from HUXLEY Press.
  • Participants will be chosen at the discretion of HUXLEY Press and all decisions are final. No communication or correspondence will be entered to regarding the selection of participants.
  • The chosen participants will be required to supply a headshot and biography for publicity purposes.
  • The chosen participants will be expected to attend and participate in fortnightly workshops on Tuesday evenings from 7 June 2022 to 8 November 2022.
  • The chosen participants will be expected to contribute fortnightly writing assignments to HUXLEY Press for the duration of the six-month program (min. 12 articles).
  • The chosen participants will retain full copyright of their own work but grant HUXLEY Press exclusive publication rights in perpetuity unless revoked in writing. Participants will be credited for their work with a by-line on each article.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the Townsville City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
